Women in Sport Coaching Scholarship

Tennis

Philippa Martin (Pip), began coaching tennis as a 14-year-old at the Devonport Tennis Club when she was one of the top junior players in Tasmania. Pip helped at local tournaments/coaching until she relocated to the USA on a full tennis scholarship at a Division 1 NCAA University.

Playing the US College system, Pip’s achievements included the number one ranking for her college team as well as playing a season undefeated.

On her return to Australia, Pip retired as a player to focus on her coaching skills. Gray Hillier, Devonport Tennis Club Head Coach, began mentoring Pip to oversee his role and encouraged Pip to coach beginner level groups. In January 2022, Pip assumed the role of Head Coach and currently has over 70 junior athletes on court each week.

While Pip was competing, she was actively mentored and guided by several females who played professional tennis. This made a significant impact on her career. Pip hopes to have the same impact on tennis players in the north west region through being a great role model and ensuring athletes are well prepared and well-rounded to play at the elite level.

Pip has a huge vision for the North West Coast and Tasmania that in future years, Tasmania will produce an increased number of elite tennis players. Pip would like to see Tennis players developing their tennis game locally and launching their professional careers from Tasmania.

Pip has been happily married for almost 22 years to Paul and together they have two children. Both are very good tennis players and love improving their tennis games. Paul is from America and funnily enough has the same surname as Pip.

Pip loves coaching and enjoys inspiring the next generation of top tennis players and is very excited about the future.

As a part of her coaching journey, Pip has completed a Foundation Coaching Certificate, and holds a Junior Development Coaching Qualification. In the future Pip plans to complete the Professional Tennis and High-Performance Coaching qualifications.
