Background

The Tasmanian Institute of Sport was established in 1985 by the Tasmanian Government to assist Tasmania's talented athletes achieve excellence in sport.

Funding

The TIS operates with a mix of State and Federal Government funding and sponsorship from the business sector. The Institutes major corporate sponsor is Motors Tasmania.

Organisational Structure

The TIS is a division within Culture, Arts and Sport which is a business unit within the Department of State Growth Tasmania.
TIS staff include administrative and athlete welfare personnel, sports science staff and full-time accredited coaches. In addition consultants in the areas of nutrition, physiotherapy, sports psychology and sports medicine are affiliated with the TIS and are employed on a fee for service basis.

The TIS is a member of the National Institute Network (NIN).

Location and Facilities

The Tasmanian Institute of Sport operates from two facilities across the state:

  • The northern office located at the Silverdome, Launceston.
  • The southern office located at the Tasmanian Technopark, Hobart.

Both facilities provide office administration space for staff, meeting and function rooms, human performance laboratories, strength and conditioning training spaces with recovery facilities.

Sport Programs

The TIS offers scholarships to talented Tasmanian athletes in a range of sports which fit into the following sports programs:

  • National Training Centre (NTC)
  • Elite Development Program (EDP)
  • Individual Support Program (ISP)

Sport Performance

The Sports Performance Unit of the TIS is composed of sports physiology, human performance laboratory, video analysis, physical preparation, sports medicine network and talent identification and development.

Athlete Wellbeing and Engagement

The Athlete Wellbeing and Engagement program works with scholarship holders to help manage and guide their sporting commitments and work/schooling demands to sustain a healthy wellbeing and training outlook.
The program focuses on engagement, mental health, career and education, personal development and conduct and professionalism to ensure athletes show commitment and dedication beyond their sporting achievements, engage in the community, and ensure professionalism in doing so.

Talent Identification

The TALENT ID FOR 2032 project aims to identify athletes with the potential physical, physiological and mental capabilities that will help them become Olympic and Paralympic champions.

Coach Development

The TIS provides opportunities to coaches both within and outside of the organisation to assist with their personal and professional development.
The TIS runs an internal coaching group to offer professional development, offers a Women in Sport Coaching Scholarship to external coaches and has commenced a project to develop a Centre for Coaching to provide development opportunities for all Tasmanian coaches.
