2022 Tasmanian Athlete of the Year Announced

Georgia Baker was announced as the 2022 Tasmanian Athlete Year at a special cocktail function hosted by the TIS and proudly supported by 7Tasmania.

The finalists for the 2022 Tasmanian Athlete of the Year were:

  • Georgia Baker (cycling)
  • Josh Beltz (hockey)
  • Eddie Ockenden (hockey)
  • Ariarne Titmus (swimming)
  • Matthew Wade (cricket)
  • Henry Youl (rowing)

The award recognises outstanding performances at the international level, contribution to the athlete’s sport and contribution to the Tasmanian community.

Judging was based on athlete performances recorded during the period of November 2021 ‑ October 2022.

It’s been an outstanding year for Georgia, having achieved the following results:

  • Three gold medals at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games in the Teams Pursuit, 25km Points Race and Road Race. The Australian Team set a new Commonwealth Games record in the Teams Pursuit.
  • A bronze medal at the 2022 World Road Championships in the Teams Time Trial and an 8th place finish in the Individual Time Trial.
  • Two fourth place finishes in the Teams Pursuit and Madison at the 2022 World Track Championships.
  • Stage win at the Internationale LOTTO Thüringen Ladies Tour.
  • Stage win at the Santos Tour Down Under – Criterium.
